Start with Celebration

The idea of celebrating student writing is not new to me. I completely agree that in writing, and every subject, you need to celebrate what a student is doing well. The idea of writing "choices" is wonderful. I haven't thought about poetry in a really long while, but I can tell you, we will be using poetry to write in social studies next week.

I'll bet your kids will love the writing assignment to hook social studies and poetry. I imagine they never thought of them together before. : )

Rachel, thanks for the comment. I guess when I think about celebrations, I think it should be a really big deal. As I read more of this book, I am understanding just sharing your work with others is a celebration too. Poetry in Social Studies sounds great. How about making limericks of all those revolutionary war characters. You counld use comic life here too. Here's a corny one off the top of my head to get your started.

Paul Revere was a colonial man
And for his country he did stand.
A night ride did he take
Warning the minute men don't take a break.
The British are coming,so let us all wake and fight hand in hand.

Not exactly a true limerick, but a starter. Have fun!

Well, I have been praising, praising, praising! And I have to admit something... I kind of like it. However, I start to feel fake if I praise every student every time. But I am working on their self esteem this week and next week I am definitely slowing down the praise.

The poetry has been really fun.

I have kids writing poetry nonstop in their free time. Which makes me worry about reading goals.
